When You Are Table Topics Evaluator

As Table Topics Evaluator your responsibility is very similar to the Speech Evaluator, except that:

  1. The speeches are not prepared and have to be evaluated in terms of quality of thinking and presenting with minimal preparation
  2. 2The Evaluator also gives feedback to the Table Topics Master regarding the quality of topics and the quality of the handling of the session - ie. How well was the session explained to members at the beginning? Was it run enthusiastically and efficiently? Was it enjoyable? The Table Topics Master SHOULD NOT be giving long topics or long talks between topics - it should be kept lively and brisk, so give feedback on that too. Topics should first be given to people who are not otherwise contributing in major roles at the meeting - give feedback if this guideline is breached.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR:

  1. The questions - you may comment on the Table Topics Master's role.
    • Were the questions interesting? Appropriate? Answerable?
    • Were the questions concise and understandable?
    • You may offer suggestions for improvement
  1. The answer - was the question answered?
    • Was the answer well constructed?
    • Was eye contact used?
    • Did the speaker use hand gestures and body language?
    • Was there an introduction, a body and a conclusion.

DO OFFER SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVEMENT

Repeating the context of the answer only wastes time.

Table Topics may be answered in group format rather than individually.   eg. "Tonight I was looking for well constructed mini-speeches. A's response was well rounded, while I thought that B's excellent beginning needed a summary of why this was the answer" etc. Or "These topics gave excellent opportunities to introduce humour and I thought that D's response demonstrated this" etc.

At our club we have two Table Topics Evaluators - one to evaluate the odd numbered respondents (ie. numbers one, three and five) and the other to evaluate the even numbered respondents (ie. numbers two, four and six). Each of the two evaluators has two minutes in which to deliver their evaluation. This makes a TOTAL OF FOUR MINUTES OF EVALUATION TIME. Allow one minute extra in your program for evaluators to walk to/from the lectern and for comments from the Toastmaster.
