Toastmastering
SInc.e April 1976

When you are General Evaluator

It is the duty of the General Evaluator to evaluate the whole meeting, with the assistance of the Business Session Evaluator, Grammarian, Harkmaster, Gruntmaster and Time Keeper.   As General Evaluator you should confirm with these participants before the meeting that they will be available to perform the allocated roles.

Because of the obvious difficulties of this task a certain level of prior experience is necessary.   It is suggested that, except in special circumstances Toastmasters should have given at least five speeches, three evaluations and experienced all of the main duties before being assigned the duty of General Evaluator.

Like most responsibilities, the duty of General Evaluator requires preparation.   Decide on your approach to this evaluation session. Is the evaluation for any special item to be done by yourself, another member or a panel etc? If someone other than yourself is to evaluate a segment, the Toastmaster needs to be fully informed prior to the meeting.

At the meeting, when called upon by the Toastmaster of the evening, you are required to:

  • Introduce the Business Session Evaluator and Special Item Evaluator (if applicable)
  • Call for the Gruntmaster's report, Harkmaster's report, Grammarian's report and Time Keeper's report.
  • Evaluate:
    1. The individual evaluators - Did they cover all necessary points? Did they offer helpful suggestions?  Briefly cover any points missed in the other evaluations.  DO NOT repeat what another evaluator has already said.
    2. b) Business Session Critic Add your own impressions very briefly, and if necessary any further points to assist the Chairman such as parliamentary procedure.
    3. c) Table Topics Evaluator
      • Give any further comments on the overall conduct of the meeting. This could include a brief evaluation of the Toastmaster, the Special Item (if any) or timing.
      • YOUR TIME ALLOWANCE IS 10 to 15 MINUTES (this includes reports presented by the Harkmaster, Gruntmaster Grammarian and Time Keeper who are allowed two minutes each).
      • Hand back to the Toastmaster

NB. If there is no Business Session Evaluator or Special Item Evaluator nominated for the meeting then it is the responsibility of the General Evaluator to perform this duty.
